REMSA, Inc. is hiring immediately for qualified Shorebird / Endangered Species Monitors to support the Brazos Island Harbor Maintenance Dredging Project in South Padre Island, Texas.
The anticipated start date is October 14, 2026.
This is a shoreside environmental monitoring position supporting beach placement operations. Monitors will primarily observe for Piping Plovers and Red Knots and assist with compliance with applicable endangered-species protection requirements.
Operations will initially require 12-hour shifts. Once beach pumping/material placement begins, the project is expected to operate 24 hours per day, with monitors rotating 12-hour day and night shifts.
Responsibilities
- Conduct shoreside surveys and monitoring for Piping Plovers, Red Knots, and other applicable protected species.
- Identify protected species, suitable habitat, and areas being used by protected species.
- Monitor active beach placement and construction areas.
- Observe construction equipment and vehicle movements as required by project procedures.
- Document protected-species observations and monitoring activities.
- Complete accurate daily/shift monitoring reports.
- Immediately communicate protected-species observations to appropriate project personnel.
- Follow required avoidance, buffer, notification, and stop-work procedures.
- Coordinate professionally with REMSA, contractor, and project personnel.
Qualifications
Applicants must have relevant education, training, and/or documented professional experience supporting their qualifications as an Endangered Species Monitor.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience with Piping Plover and Red Knot identification and monitoring.
- Previous shorebird, endangered-species, protected-species, or environmental monitoring experience.
- Experience on beach nourishment, dredging, coastal construction, USACE, or similar environmental projects.
- Sea turtle recognition, monitoring, and avoidance training.
- Knowledge of protected-species documentation and notification procedures.
- Ability to work independently for 12-hour day or night shifts in an active coastal construction environment.
- Strong written communication and field documentation skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to satisfy applicable site-access requirements.

Important Scope Information
This is a shoreside monitoring assignment. It does not currently include offshore/vessel-based protected species observation, hopper-dredge monitoring, sea turtle trawling, or sea turtle capture/relocation.
Personnel will not handle protected wildlife unless specifically authorized and appropriately permitted.
